'A Queen is Crowned'
Tuesday 29th May
All tickets £379 mins
Made in 1953 in Technicolor. Please ‘phone to reserve a seat.
Starring Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and Members of the Royal Family as well as Heads of State from around the World.
As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Flicks-in-Ross presents a unique opportunity to experience this documentary on the big screen. The only Technicolor film of Her Majesty the Queen's coronation, (I saw it in 1953), this lavish film was written by celebrated playwright Christopher Fry.
Since the rituals of the Coronation were well established, Sir Laurence Olivier was able to pre-record his narration so the film could be rushed into cinemas immediately after the event! The result was a box office sensation.
It also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA and was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Feature Documentary category.
Unseen in cinemas since its initial release 60 years ago, 'A Queen is Crowned' is both a colourful recording of one of the most spectacular events of the 20th century and a time capsule from a more deferential age.

From director Steven Spielberg comes War Horse, an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets.~

Review
Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), it seems the sky's the limit--major movie stardom awaits. The Artist tells the story of their interlinked destinies. The film is enormously likable and is anchored by a charming performance from Jean Dujardin, as silent movie star George Valentin.~
